WORLD YOUTH DAY 2008 SYDNEY
World Youth Day.... from a Brisbane Archdiocese perspective.......
The WYD2008 will occur in Sydney and as a precursor, after some months journeying around parts of South East Asia and Oceania, the WYD Cross and Icon will journey around Australia from July 1, 2007. In 1984 Pope John Paul II entrusted to the world’s youth a huge wooden cross asking that it be ‘carried throughout the world as a sign of Christ’s love for humanity’ and in 2003 announced that it be accompanied on its pilgrimage by the Icon of Our Lady.
The WYD Cross and Icon will travel to all dioceses in Australia as a means of promoting dialogue with youth and enabling evangelization, cathechesis and prayer to create a sense of anticipation around World Youth Week culminating with the arrival of the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI who will pray with the hundreds of thousands of young people, 15 yrs to 35 yrs old, from around the world who will gather in Sydney.

About Our School
St. Francis Xavier was established in 1975 to serve the families of the local Catholic Parish of Runaway Bay. The current enrolment is 637 students.
St Francis Xavier supports the mission of the Holy Family Parish by offering quality c0-education within the context of Catholic values and traditions. As such, there are genuine efforts to establish a true community of faith and learning– one which recognises the uniqueness and dignity of the individual and operates on the gospel values of respect and care for one another.
Through its curriculum and courses, its celebration and worship rituals, its cultivation of the aesthetics and its Religious Education Programme, the school attempts to give witness to the essential wholeness of the human experience - social, moral, physical, spiritual and intellectual development.
The world in which we live is everchanging, and our teenagers are going to be exposed to social pressures and choices that did not exist to the same extent at other times. At St Francis Xavier, we aim to provide an eight year programme, from preschool to year 7, that is designed to better equip our young people to confront the issues of their day in the light of the gospel values.

Winston Churchill loved to tell the story of the little boy who fell off thepier into deep ocean water. An older sailor, heedless of the great danger to himself, dove into the stormy water, struggled with the boy, and finally, exhausted, brought him to safety. Two days later the boy’smother came with him to the same pier, seeking the sailor who had rescuedher son. Finding him, she asked, “You dove into the ocean to bring my boy out?” “I did,” he replied. “Then where’s his hat?” demanded the mother. In today’s gospel Jesus tells the story of nine ungrateful lepers. And a Joke :Three men were fishing on a lake one day, when Jesus walked across the waterand joined them in the boat. When the three astonished men had settled down enough to speak, the first man asked humbly, “Jesus, I’ve suffered from back pain ever sinceI lifted a very heavy long range gun in the Vietnam war. Could you help me?” “Of course myson,” Jesus said. When Jesus touched the man’s back, the man felt relief for the first time in years. The second man, who wore very thick glasses and had a hard time reading and driving, askedif Jesus could do anything about his eyesight. Jesus smiled, removed the man’s glasses and tossed them in the lake. When the glasses hit the water, the man’s eyesight cleared up and he could see everything distinctly. Then Jesus turned to the third man. “What can I do for you?” he asked. At this, the man put up his hands defensively and cried : Don’t touch me! I’m on long-term disability.”

| Church building renovations
|
For more than 4 YEARS there has been talk and discussion about repairs and renovations to our church.
27 months ago, on 16th March 2003 we held a Parish Assembly to discuss OUR vision for Holy Family, and amongst the many items we took on board, was that the Parish should explore the possibilities of renovating our church.
It was on November 22nd 2003 that we formed our building committee. This team of people has been working since that time with people from the Archdiocese Liturgical Commission and our selected Architects on many aspects of the proposed renovations. This has included SEEKING YOUR VIEWS, inviting some of you into the consultation process, LISTENING to those of you who approached us and COMMUNICATING our progress as often as we could.
So you can see a lot of discussion, parishioner involvement and preparation has taken place.
The following is an extract from a presentation made by our Parish Pastoral Council Chairman on the weekend of 2nd & 3rd July 2005.
"I am going to hand over to Fr Barry in a moment, but before I do I just want to tell you what we are going to do this evening/morning.
Firstly, Fr Barry will present to you the BROAD DETAILS of the repairs & renovations. Now this won’t cover in EXACT detail placement of various specific items of church furniture, this comes later when work commences, however he will cover the main items. After his brief presentation Fr Barry will then hand back to me so that I can tell you how we are going to fund the renovations.
And lastly, because of time constraints we will unfortunately be unable to take questions during the presentation, however there will be members of the Parish Council, Building Committee & Finance Committee available in the church entrance after mass if you want to ask anything or discuss any aspect of the renovations.
I’ll now hand over to Fr Barry"…..
Extract from Fr Barry's presentation.....
Fr Barry presented a series of images depicting his vision for Holy Family, and what he thought God might want for the Holy Family church. This included a church which was welcoming, perhaps visually appealing and one which meets and fulfills all of the current liturgical standards and practices of today.
Fr Barry then took us on a visual tour of the various parts of the planned renovations, which included:
-
A new entrance and gathering space
-
A newly designed Sanctuary area
-
A new baptismal area and font
-
A Blessed Sacrament Chapel
-
New seating and carpetting
Fr Barry concluded by saying that in these potentially uncertain times of reducing numbers of priests, potentially unsettling times of some parishes amalgamating, we had the opportunity to really ensure and secure the future of Holy Family by supporting our Parish renovation program. He then handed back to the Pastoral Council Chairperson.
Now as most of you have probably not met him, I am going to ask Colin Priddle, Chairman of our Finance Council, who has been a part of our building committee to join me as I talk you through our financial plan.
NEXT we will handout a brochure, which provides details of our planned church renovations. Can I now ask our helpers to handout sufficient brochures at the end of each row of seats so I can talk you through things.
The Chairperson then described in detail the contents of the brochure which gave a synopsis of our parishes finances, and estimate of the planned renovation and building costs. He then gave an overview of how we could all participate in a gifting programe which could see us raising money for the deposit required so we could obtain our loan from the Archdoicese.
